So far as the amending bill is concerned
can now agree to Mr May's proposal.(in 23279)
As to the further point. I think it would be well ta let the proposal to repeal the Chinese Passengers Act drop out if sight. As Mr Cunliffe says, a further Imperial Act would seem to be required to take its place and I take it that H.M.G are not anxious to have the trouble of putting through such an Act, in view especially of the discussion on Chinese generally which would certainly arise. There is no evidence that the existing act causes any real inconvenience and in any case this matter cannot well be dealt with until the Cabinet has again discussed the question of the carriage of contract coolies in British vessels to
foreign countries. Our letter has failed to draw any indication of whether Mr Lloyd Georges now willing tha
that matter should be further discussed and it would
probably be best to ask his private secretary to
ascertain this. Meanwhile,
